Concerns have emerged over the National Single Window Project, launched on March 27, 2026, to simplify import and export processes. Reports of delays in the digital trade system have left thousands of containers trapped at the ports.
However, Chief Emeka Chukwumalu, Executive Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Apapa chapter, has reassured stakeholders that the challenges are temporary. He noted that all new projects face teething problems, which are eventually resolved.
Chukwumalu recalled similar experiences with the Nigeria Integrated Customs Information System (NICIS I & II) and the B’Odogwu platform, both of which overcame initial setbacks to become effective. He commended the Nigeria Customs Service, the lead agency, for coordinating efforts to unify all relevant agencies for smoother operations.
The chairman expressed particular enthusiasm for the Single Window Project, highlighting its homegrown nature. Unlike previous foreign-driven systems that drained foreign exchange, this platform is locally developed, cost-effective, and easier to maintain. He emphasized its potential to create jobs and benefit Nigerians directly and indirectly.
“It’s our own. It’s homegrown. Many Nigerians will benefit from it directly or indirectly. It will generate employment opportunities for Nigerians,” Chukwumalu said.
He added that ongoing training and retraining of officials and stakeholders would soon ease current difficulties. While acknowledging that people often resist change, he stressed that adaptation is inevitable and necessary for progress.
Chukwumalu also identified overlapping functions among agencies as a major challenge, particularly disputes over control of certain products. He advised that tariff provisions should clearly define agency responsibilities to eliminate ambiguity and speed up operations.
