The Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has successfully wrapped up a week-long in-house training programme held from Monday, October 13 to Friday, October 17, 2025. The initiative focused on enhancing the capacity, professionalism, and operational efficiency of senior officers across various units.
At the opening ceremony, Customs Area Controller Comptroller Frank Onyeka underscored the importance of continuous learning, describing the training as a strategic investment in personnel development. He stressed that the training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of the personnel of the Service, urging officers to apply the insights gained to improve service delivery.
The training featured sessions led by internal resource persons, showcasing the Command’s depth of expertise. Topics covered included: Physical Examination (led by Comptroller Onyeka); Reputation and Risk Management; Documentary Checks and Evidence Exploitation; Customs Procedure Codes and Classification; VIN Valuation and Customs Valuation; and Code of Conduct and Customs Administration.
Comptroller Onyeka revealed that while this session targeted senior officers, plans are underway to extend similar training to junior officers, ensuring holistic capacity building across all ranks.
Officers praised the programme’s practical approach and relevance. Assistant Controller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit described it as “laudable,” noting that it introduced her to updated Standard Operating Procedures and best practices that will enhance her confidence and efficiency.
AC Bonat added that the training broadened her understanding and equipped her with tools directly applicable to her role.
In his closing remarks, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to cultivating a skilled, knowledgeable, and proactive workforce capable of navigating the evolving demands of modern customs operations.
