The Marine and Blue Economy is a goldmine that requires the energy and innovation of Nigeria’s youths to fully realize its economic potential, according to Dr. Kayode Collins Farinto, immediate past Acting President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA).
Speaking on the theme “Raising National Awareness on the Significance and Economic Potential of the Blue Economy” at a birthday colloquium organized by the Nigerian Economic Growth Forum (NEGF) in his honour on Thursday, February 19, 2026, in Apapa, Lagos, Farinto asserted that the sector could generate up to ₦3 trillion annually if properly harnessed and driven by vibrant young professionals.
He cited the transformation in the Ministry of Internal Affairs under youthful leadership—where international passports can now be processed within 48 hours—as proof that young minds can deliver efficiency and innovation.
Farinto further called for stakeholders with deep industry knowledge to be appointed to head the ministry and its agencies, stressing that such leadership would ensure better results. He identified key areas of the Blue Economy capable of boosting government revenue, including fishing and aquaculture, maritime tourism, and protection of indigenous operators from foreign dominance.
In his opening remarks, convener Mr. Olamilekan Adisa described Farinto as “an enigma and a force to reckon with in the maritime sub-sector.” He recalled how his first encounter with Farinto inspired the creation of a maritime television program that aired for over five years on MITV.
The event was attended by prominent maritime figures, including former ANLCA Secretary General Otunba Babatunde Mukaila and leading maritime journalists, all of whom paid glowing tributes to Farinto’s contributions to the industry.
