The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has congratulated members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for their contributions to Nigeria’s successful election into Category ‘C’ of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium.
Comrade Abi described Nigeria’s victory on November 28, 2025, in London—where the country secured a seat on the IMO Council—as a landmark achievement in the nation’s maritime history and diplomatic engagements. He emphasized that the feat was remarkable, commendable, and worthy of national celebration.
The Union praised the committee’s efforts as pivotal in advancing Nigeria’s maritime reforms and showcasing the country’s capability on the global stage, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s position within the international maritime community.
While expressing gratitude to Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, for his leadership, Comrade Abi also highlighted the effectiveness of the committee members. He noted that their work has reignited Nigeria’s commitment to IMO objectives and enhanced international maritime cooperation. The Union further thanked the federal government for promoting Nigeria’s interests in global maritime governance.
