The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has extended heartfelt appreciation to the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, for his instrumental role in the successful unionization of Melsmore Ltd and the formal signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the company and MWUN.
The newly signed CBA establishes a clear framework for the rights, responsibilities, and welfare of unionized workers at Melsmore Ltd, a shipping company based in Victoria Island, Lagos. This milestone marks a significant step in strengthening labor relations within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Comrade Bunu praised Dr. Mobereola for his proactive leadership, discipline, and unwavering commitment to fair labor practices. He described the NIMASA DG as a seasoned administrator whose deep expertise in maritime affairs was pivotal in achieving consensus between MWUN and Melsmore Ltd.
Dr. Mobereola’s impartial engagement with both the union and company management ensured a balanced and just resolution. His efforts, alongside those of NIMASA’s Executive Director of Labour and Cabotage Services, were lauded for fostering mutual understanding and respect.
The MWUN also commended Melsmore Ltd’s management for their openness and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. Comrade Bunu emphasized that companies that prioritize the welfare of their workers, in line with labor laws, contribute to a more stable and productive maritime industry.
Reflecting on the journey to this agreement, Comrade Bunu noted that while the process involved rigorous discussions, the outcome was a testament to the power of collaboration and good faith. He hailed Dr. Mobereola as the “Doctor of the Maritime Industry” for his big-hearted mediation and dedication to industrial harmony.
With this agreement in place, MWUN looks forward to a continued and strengthened partnership with both NIMASA and Melsmore Ltd, anchored in mutual respect and shared commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
