In a landmark development for Nigeria’s maritime sector, Melsmore Marine Limited, headquartered in Victoria Island, Lagos, has officially signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN). The agreement was finalized on Monday, marking a new chapter in labour relations between the company and its unionized workforce.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, President General of MWUN, praised the management of Melsmore for its commitment to worker welfare and industrial harmony. He described the agreement as a major achievement, emphasizing that no responsible industrial firm should overlook the well-being of its employees.
Comrade Bunu noted that Melsmore understands the rhythm of industrial relations, even as it recognizes that a well-treated workforce is key to achieving optimal productivity since when workers are happy, the company thrives.
The agreement includes a significant wage adjustment, aligning workers’ pay with current economic realities in Nigerian. This move, according to the management, is aimed at boosting morale and enhancing output among union members.
Comrade Bunu commended Melsmore’s leadership for their openness and willingness to engage with the Union, noting that such collaboration sets a positive precedent in the maritime industry. He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to flourish, reinforcing mutual respect and progress.
He appreciated Melsmore’s listening ear, adding that the agreement is a testament to what can be achieved when management and labour work together.
