The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, has dismissed suggestions that political ambitions are interfering with his regulatory duties, stressing that his commitment remains firmly on advancing maritime reforms.
Responding to speculation within industry circles that his attention is divided between official responsibilities and emerging political interests—particularly amid recent debates over tariff adjustments—Akutah described the claims as unfounded and a misrepresentation of his priorities.
He emphasized that all decisions under his leadership are guided strictly by law, stakeholder consultations, and the broader objective of maintaining balance within the maritime economy. “Public officials are often subject to speculation, but such narratives should not overshadow institutional work or undermine regulatory actions taken in good faith,” he stated.
Akutah reiterated that the Council’s mandate is to protect national trade interests, ensure fair regulation of the port economy, and strengthen stability across the shipping and logistics value chain. He noted that political rumors do not alter the Council’s regulatory direction, adding that his administration continues to engage stakeholders and implement reforms aimed at boosting efficiency and transparency.
Highlighting the importance of focus and continuity in leading a critical economic regulator, he urged stakeholders to assess his performance based on policy outcomes and sector stability rather than speculation.
Concluding, the NSC boss reaffirmed his commitment to the Nigerian maritime sector, stressing that his priority remains enduring regulatory interventions to support economic growth, safeguard stakeholder interests, and enhance Nigeria’s position in regional and global trade.
