The Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has been widely commended for celebrating its past leaders whose contributions have shaped the association’s success story.
The event, held on Friday, April 24, 2026, in Apapa, Lagos, drew goodwill messages from across the maritime sector and the traditional institution. The Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control in West and Central Africa (Abuja MoU) praised MARAN for consistently advancing maritime journalism, promoting transparency, and amplifying stakeholder voices. Representing the Secretary General, Captain Sunday Umoren, Engr. Richard Owolabi emphasized that honouring past presidents reflects MARAN’s commitment to service, integrity, and innovation.
Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, recalled his long-standing relationship with MARAN dating back to 1989 when he was introduced by then-president Mr. Asu Beks. He noted that MARAN’s coverage and support helped him earn recognition as Best PRO of the Nigeria Customs Service in 1999 and contributed to Tin Can Island Port Command winning the Best Publicized Command Trophy in 2000.
On behalf of the honourees, Mrs. Nneka Rosemary Ugochukwu, widow of late Mr. Ray Ugochukwu, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition. Mr. Sesan Onileimo also thanked MARAN, pledging continued support through the “MARAN Forum of Past Presidents.”
Delivering a paper titled The Role of Media in Sustainable Maritime Development, former Minister of Interior, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho (represented by Dr. Emeka Akabogu), described the celebration as one of stewardship, sacrifice, and continuity. He stressed that leadership in journalism demands courage, persistence, and a commitment to facts.
In his welcome address, MARAN Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mr. Tunde Ayodele, reflected on the association’s founding in 1988 by visionary young journalists determined to establish a dedicated maritime reporting beat. He paid tribute to deceased leaders and highlighted the enduring contributions of past presidents such as Pastor Alban Opara, Elder Asu Beks, Mr. Sesan Onileimo, Elder Pius Mordi, and Dr. Bolaji Akinola.
Ayodele concluded: “Our past presidents are not only accomplished journalists but have distinguished themselves in public service, mentorship, and advisory roles. Their legacy continues to inspire MARAN and the wider maritime community.”
