His Royal Highness, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara mni, Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, has extended a heartfelt goodwill message to the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) as the association celebrates its past presidents.
In his message, the former Comptroller of Customs and one-time Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Apapa and Tin Can Island Customs Commands, reflected on his long-standing relationship with MARAN, which dates back to 1989. He recalled being introduced to the association by then-president Mr. Asu Beks, whom he fondly referred to as “Asu Best.”
Alhaji Kankara praised successive MARAN presidents, including Mr. Pius Mordi, the late Mr. Ray Ugochwuku, and Mr. Sesan Onileimo, for their dedication and professionalism. He noted that MARAN’s coverage and support played a pivotal role in his career, citing his recognition as Best PRO of the Nigeria Customs Service in 1999 and Tin Can Island Port Command’s award as Best Publicized Command in 2000.
He fondly remembered hosting monthly press briefings at the MARAN Press Centre in Apapa, describing them as lively sessions that fostered camaraderie and strengthened ties between Customs and the media.
“Even after my retirement from Customs ten years ago, I continue to maintain strong ties with MARAN members, a testament to the enduring bond we share,” he said.
Although unable to attend the celebration in person due to pressing security challenges in Katsina State, the Kanwan Katsina conveyed his deep respect and affection for MARAN, wishing the association and its members continued success, good health, and prosperity.
“Thank you, and may God bless you all. Nagode!” he concluded.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, MARAN Caretaker Committee, Mr. Tunde Ayodele, noted that
MARAN was founded in 1988 by a group of young, visionary men—with a shared passion to carve out a dedicated maritime reporting beat in Nigeria.
He commended them for laying the foundation for what MARAN has become today, hence the need to celebrate and honour their enduring legacy, sacrifice, and vision.
He also solemnly remembered with deep respect those among them who had gone to be with the Lord, praying that their souls continue to rest in peace. A moment of silence was observed in their honour.
“Our past presidents are not only accomplished journalists but have also distinguished themselves in various sectors of the Nigerian economy. Their contributions continue to shape the nation in meaningful ways. From leadership in public service to continued mentorship and support for the media, they remain pillars of excellence and inspiration.
“Names such as Pastor Alban Opara, a pioneer who has continued his service in the vineyard of God; Elder Asu Beks, known for his unwavering support for maritime journalism; Mr. Sesan Onileimo, a consistent contributor to the growth of journalists in the sector; Elder Pius Mordi, who serves in government at the state level; and Dr. Bolaji Akinola, who continues to play a key advisory role in the maritime space—these are just a few among many who have upheld the values of this association”, the Chairman said.
