The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, in collaboration with the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNO-WTSSA), has declared its resolve to unionize maritime workers employed by Temile Development Company Nig. Ltd, located at No. 2, Omedu Street, Rumueme, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Despite repeated letters of unionization sent by MWUN and NMNO-WTSSA, Temile Development Company has consistently ignored the unions’ requests. Correspondence dated May 26, 2025; September 16, 2025; October 2025; and April 1, 2026, all titled “Request for the Unionization of Our Members in Your Company”, remain unanswered.
Comrade Bunu stressed that no company in Nigeria—or anywhere in the world—is above the authority of organized labour and the laws protecting workers. He condemned the continued practice of casualization, noting that it has been outlawed and will not be tolerated.
“Casualization of workers is a relic of the past. Any employer who persists in such archaic practices will be decisively dealt with. Nigerians cannot be exploited under the guise of employment. Labour law violators will face severe consequences,” Comrade Bunu warned.
The MWUN President-General has issued a 21-day ultimatum to Temile Development Company Nig. Ltd to respond to all union correspondence and agree to a joint meeting. Failure to comply will trigger decisive action from the unions.
