The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has suspended tollgate operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following severe traffic congestion caused by its new cashless payment policy.
Since Monday, the enforcement of FAAN’s “Operation Go Cashless” initiative—which requires motorists to pay tolls electronically using preloaded access cards—has led to long queues and frustration among travellers. The gridlock stretched for several kilometres along the airport access road, leaving hundreds stranded for hours and causing many to miss their flights.
By Wednesday, the situation worsened as some passengers abandoned their vehicles and resorted to commercial motorcycles in a desperate bid to catch flights.
The policy, introduced simultaneously at MMIA and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on March 1, 2026, was intended to modernize toll collection. Instead, it triggered widespread anger and operational chaos.
On Thursday morning, the MMIA toll plaza was deserted, allowing motorists to drive through freely without payment. FAAN has confirmed it is working on an alternative system to prevent future gridlock while maintaining its cashless vision.
