President Bola Tinubu will, on Wednesday, formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following his unanimous confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, Abuja. The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement issued after the council’s meeting.
The Nigeria Police Council meeting, presided over by President Tinubu, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional requirements.
Other top government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Walson-Jack.
Speaking at the meeting, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s track record, particularly highlighting his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he gained commendation for effective crime control and operational excellence.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also described the appointment as well-deserved, noting that Disu’s career progression reflects professionalism and dedication.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike further applauded Disu’s performance during his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015. Wike also recalled Disu’s tenure as Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, commending his strategic impact in tackling crime within the territory.
Disu’s confirmation follows his recent appointment as Acting IGP after the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun last Tuesday.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Over the years, he has acquired qualifications in public administration, criminology, forensic investigation, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship — credentials the Presidency says underscore his commitment to modern, knowledge-driven policing.
Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos.
Like his predecessor, Disu previously worked closely with President Tinubu during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. While Egbetokun served as Chief Security Officer, Disu functioned as Aide-de-Camp, marking a longstanding professional relationship between the new IGP and the President.
