The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, David Bird, has stated that the refinery is delivering tangible public health and environmental benefits through the production of Euro 5 standard fuels, placing Nigeria among countries with some of the highest fuel quality specifications in the world.
Speaking during an interaction with selected journalists, Bird explained that modern fuel standards are primarily driven by public health considerations, particularly the need to reduce harmful emissions caused by high sulphur levels and metal content in petroleum products.
He disclosed that the refinery currently produces Euro 5 specification petrol with a sulphur content capped at 50 parts per million — a benchmark aimed at protecting both human health and the environment.
“Fuel specifications have evolved over time in response to public health requirements,” Bird said.
“Euro 5 is not about imposing additional costs on industry; it is about safeguarding public health and ensuring cleaner air. The reduction of sulphur in fuels has significantly minimised issues such as acid rain and other harmful emissions.”
He noted that while several West African countries still rely on older fuel specifications with significantly higher sulphur content, Nigeria is now benefiting from cleaner, locally refined products.
He also pointed out that metals such as lead, once used to improve fuel performance, have long been phased out in advanced markets due to their serious health implications.
“Nigerians are now enjoying low-sulphur, metal-free petrol comparable to what is available in Europe,” he added.
“This is something many Europeans take for granted and should not be viewed as a luxury. If the industry can deliver the highest standards, consumers deserve to enjoy them. Our goal is to expand access to high-quality fuels across the African continent.”
Bird further emphasised that the refinery’s capacity to consistently produce cleaner, higher-quality fuels highlights its transformative impact on Nigeria’s energy sector, aligning domestic fuel standards with global best practices.
According to him, the achievement marks not only a major industrial milestone but also a significant advancement in environmental sustainability and public health protection in Nigeria.
