The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), in its role as the Port Economic Regulator, has directed all shipping companies, agents, and terminal operators at Nigerian ports to immediately suspend any planned review or increase in charges. This directive remains in effect until full engagement and consultation with relevant stakeholders have been conducted.
The Council clarified that while recent tariff adjustments were made in line with its statutory mandate, these were based on a transparent and structured regulatory process. This included technical evaluations, cost analysis, and consultations with service providers. However, such engagements do not equate to automatic approval of new charges.
Dr. Pius Akutah (MON), Executive Secretary/CEO of the NSC, emphasized that any operator implementing charge reviews without stakeholder input will face regulatory sanctions. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and inclusive dialogue, warning that the NSC will not hesitate to enforce compliance through appropriate legal measures.
The Council remains dedicated to protecting port users, fostering fair competition, and ensuring a stable and predictable business environment in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
