In a swift follow-up to their recent seizure of 25.5kg of cocaine from a Brazilian-flagged vessel, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a massive consignment of Canadian Loud, a premium strain of cannabis, at the Apapa Port.
Acting on credible intelligence from the NDLEA, the joint operation uncovered 2,374 packages of cannabis, weighing a total of 1,187 kilograms. The drugs were concealed in 55 bags hidden inside a 20-foot container (No. FCIU 6369526), which also contained two imported vehicles.
During a joint inspection, officers from both agencies discovered the illicit cargo. The cannabis, now in NDLEA custody, was meticulously packed in 500-gram sachets, indicating a sophisticated smuggling attempt.
Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Command, praised the seamless collaboration between the NCS and NDLEA. He reaffirmed the Service’s unwavering commitment to combating smuggling and protecting national interests.
“Just days ago, I emphasized that no consignment will leave this port unchecked. Our inter-agency synergy ensures we stay ahead of criminal elements,” Oshoba stated.
“Regardless of the trade volume we handle, we will never compromise national security or economic integrity. While we focus on maximizing government revenue, our officers remain vigilant and alert.”
Issuing a stern warning, Oshoba added, “Let me reiterate—any trader, importer, exporter, freight forwarder, or licensed customs agent who dares to challenge our resolve this festive season and beyond will face the full weight of the law. Investigations are ongoing, and we will ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
