The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially disowned Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s recent declaration to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), clarifying that the move is solely his and that of the Kwankwasiya Movement, not the party itself.
Speaking in Lagos on Monday, NNPP National Secretary Comrade Ogini Olaposi emphasized that Kwankwaso’s decision reflects a personal political realignment and not a shift in party ideology.
“By declaring his intention to join the APC, Kwankwaso has confirmed that he and his movement are no longer part of the NNPP,” Olaposi stated.
He added that the party had already expelled Kwankwaso and his allies for anti-party activities, and that their Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiya Movement ended after the 2023 presidential election.
Olaposi accused Kwankwaso of attempting to hijack the party and described his political influence as diminished, noting that several key members of the Kwankwasiya group have already defected to the APC.
“Kwankwaso is being overrated. He betrayed the NNPP, which gave him a platform for his presidential ambition. Nigerians should negotiate with him as an individual, not under the NNPP banner,” he warned.
The NNPP leadership reiterated that any future alliance with the APC or other parties ahead of the 2027 elections would be a collective decision made by its members.
Olaposi also expressed frustration over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in updating the party’s leadership records following a court-sanctioned convention that produced Dr. Agbo Major as the new national chairman.
