The President of the Shipping Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN),
Comrade Tajudeen Abass has demanded
decasualization of Union Members employed by Port and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML), proposing a phased monthly approach. He also demanded Practical Training Initiatives for workers on e-systems, equipment handling, and hazard recognition within terminal operations.
Speaking when the leadership of MWUN led by its President General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, paid a courtesy visit to the terminal, Abas
highlighted the importance of in-person engagement, stating that direct interaction was essential beyond phone conversations. He presented other demands to PTML’s management.
The President-General of the union alongside the Shipping Branch Executives, had embarked on a familiarization visit to PTML terminal at Apapa Quays, Lagos, on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, MWUN’s Head of Media, Comrade Bunu emphasized that the visit was aimed at introducing the newly elected union officials to PTML’s management and reinforcing the longstanding relationship between both organizations.
The MWUN delegation was warmly received by PTML’s Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Nitin Senan, who represented the Managing Director, Mr. Ascanio Russo. Mr. Senan introduced key members of his team, including Mr. Raul Bhargava (Chief Finance Officer), Mr. Daniel Uti (Human Resource Manager, Grimaldi Agency Nigeria), and Janel (Chairman of the Agency).
Mr. Senan commended MWUN’s leadership and recalled his two-decade-long relationship with Comrade Bunu, dating back to his arrival in Nigeria. He also acknowledged Comrade Tajudeen Abass, President of MWUN’s Shipping Branch, congratulating both leaders on their recent electoral victories.
Comrade Bunu expressed appreciation for PTML’s consistent support and affirmed the Union’s commitment to fostering mutual growth and innovation in Nigeria’s maritime sector. He reiterated MWUN’s openness to progressive ideas that align with both national and global developments.
He concluded by thanking PTML for the opportunity to engage and reaffirmed MWUN’s readiness to collaborate on workforce development and operational safety.
