The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reported a significant revenue increase in January 2026, collecting \u20a6145.9 billion, up from \u20a6116.4 billion in January 2025. The \u20a629.5 billion rise represents a 25% year-on-year growth.<\/p>\n
Comptroller Frank Onyeka, who announced the figures at a media briefing, attributed the performance to improved compliance and operational efficiency. He noted that the January results build on the Command\u2019s robust 2025 performance, when it exceeded its \u20a61.51 trillion target by closing the year at \u20a61.609 trillion.<\/p>\n
Despite the impressive numbers, Onyeka stressed that revenue collection alone would not define the Command\u2019s priorities in 2026. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy mandate this year is to be known as a trade enabler,\u201d he said. \u201cOur objective is not maximum revenue extraction but collectable revenue that allows businesses to remain viable.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained that the \u201ccollectable revenue\u201d approach is designed to ensure traders meet their duty obligations without being overburdened, thereby sustaining business operations and economic contributions.<\/p>\n
Onyeka reaffirmed his commitment to implementing a fully paperless clearance system before the end of the second quarter of 2026. Under the initiative, importers and clearing agents will process documentation and complete clearance procedures entirely online, eliminating physical contact with Customs officers. <\/p>\n
The system will improve transparency and minimize opportunities for unethical practices.<\/p>\n
Acknowledging potential network-related challenges, Onyeka assured stakeholders that training and sensitisation would precede the transition. <\/p>\n
He noted that though perfection may not be achieved from day one, but there is commitment to continuously improve.<\/p>\n
The Controller also pledged improved internal efficiency, directing officers to ensure timely processing of files and collaborative resolution of classification issues.
