The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has confirmed that two of its personnel were critically injured following a violent confrontation with suspected armed drug traffickers in Ogun State. <\/p>\n
According to a press statement issued by Zakari Chado, Public Relations Officer of the Command, t he incident occurred on Thursday, 22 January 2026, at about 4:00 p.m. in the Akokoro area of Iwoye, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area. Acting on credible intelligence, officers intercepted a 12-tyre truck believed to be loaded with illicit drugs and contraband. <\/p>\n
Before reinforcements could arrive, the suspects mobilized heavily armed hoodlums who launched a coordinated assault on the patrol team. The attackers mounted barricades at nine key access points, opened fire on the officers, and disabled a Customs patrol vehicle by shooting out its tyres. Amid the chaos, the smugglers escaped with the seized truck. <\/p>\n
Two Customs officers sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving intensive medical treatment. <\/p>\n
Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, Acting Area Controller of Ogun I Command, condemned the attack as \u201cbarbaric\u201d and vowed that such resistance would not deter the Service from fulfilling its mandate. He urged traditional rulers and community leaders to caution their subjects against aiding smugglers or attacking security personnel, warning that offenders will face the full weight of the law. <\/p>\n
