On Monday, January 19, 2026, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, officially inaugurated the Governing Board of the Nigerian Shippers\u2019 Council (NSC) during a ceremony held at the Ministry\u2019s Conference Room in Abuja.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Special Adviser to the Minister, the inauguration marks a pivotal step in enhancing governance and accountability within Nigeria\u2019s Marine and Blue Economy sector. Dr. Oyetola emphasized that the Board\u2019s constitution\u2014approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, under the Renewed Hope Agenda\u2014demonstrates the Federal Government\u2019s dedication to institutional reform and the strategic revitalization of the maritime industry as a cornerstone of national economic growth.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the NSC\u2019s role as the Port Economic Regulator, the Minister underscored its responsibility in ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency in port operations, pricing, and service delivery. He noted that effective regulation is essential to reducing port-related costs, facilitating trade, and boosting Nigeria\u2019s competitiveness in global commerce.<\/p>\n
Dr. Oyetola charged the newly inaugurated Board with the task of providing strategic leadership, policy oversight, and measurable outcomes in trade facilitation and sectoral performance. He called for synergy between the Board and the Council\u2019s Management, stressing the importance of professionalism, integrity, and results-driven governance.<\/p>\n
The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry\u2019s full support for the Board and urged members to uphold the trust placed in them by the President through disciplined and impactful service.<\/p>\n
The newly constituted Board is chaired by Dr. Ibrahim Shehu Shema, former Governor of Katsina State. Other members include Dr. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary\/CEO, NSC, Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji (NACCIMA representative), Mr. John Aluya (MAN representative), Rt. Hon. Chiji Collins, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Olaseinde, Dr. Funmilola Rashidat Adeoti, Alhaji Mele Kofo Gladem, Mrs. Hafsatu Mohammed (NNPCL representative), Hon. Maharazu Adamu Dayi, and Mrs. Uzoamaka Okereke (Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy representative)<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Dr. Shema expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Minister Oyetola for the opportunity to serve. He pledged the Board\u2019s commitment to professionalism, regulatory efficiency, and collaborative engagement with the Ministry and NSC Management to drive reforms, enhance port performance, and support Nigeria\u2019s economic agenda.<\/p>\n
