The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Apapa Area Command has launched a comprehensive first aid training program for its officers and personnel. Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba described the initiative as a strategic investment in staff welfare, safety, and operational readiness.<\/p>\n
Welcoming the Service\u2019s medical team, Oshoba emphasized that the training reflects the commitment of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, to prioritize the health and safety of Customs personnel. He stressed that first aid is a vital life skill, especially for officers operating in high-risk environments.<\/p>\n
\u201cTimely interventions like CPR, bleeding control, and stroke recognition can determine whether a victim survives or suffers long-term damage,\u201d Oshoba said. \u201cIn emergencies, the absence of first aid knowledge can lead to avoidable tragedies.\u201d<\/p>\n
He noted that Customs officers often work in remote areas where immediate medical help may not be available, making it essential for them to act as first responders. \u201cThe person next to you could be your emergency nurse or paramedic,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Oshoba urged both experienced and first-time participants to fully engage in the training, highlighting the importance of hands-on practice in mastering emergency response techniques. He officially declared the program open, calling it \u201ctime well spent\u201d for the Command and the Service.<\/p>\n
Leading the sessions was Comptroller A.S. Aku, Zonal Medical Officer for Zone B, who guided officers through practical exercises including CPR, choking relief, bleeding control, and managing injuries such as fractures and gunshot wounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn an emergency, you are the first responder,\u201d Aku reminded participants. \u201cWhat you do in those first few minutes before help arrives is critical. This training equips you with the basic skills to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
He emphasized the importance of understanding the four key goals of first aid, recognizing different types of emergencies, and responding calmly and effectively.<\/p>\n
