Comptroller Godwin Otunla, Customs Area Controller of Ogun 1 Border Command, Idiroko, has emphasized the importance of a peaceful home life in boosting the morale and performance of customs officers.<\/p>\n
Speaking during an interview with a group of journalists in Idiroko last Friday, Otunla explained that officers who enjoy stability at home tend to be more focused and effective in their duties. \u201cWhen an officer\u2019s home is settled, their mind is at rest, and they can give their best at work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He encourages his personnel to maintain strong family ties and regularly visit their loved ones. \u201cI always tell my officers\u2014if you need to travel to see your family, come to me. Take permission and go. If your home is not settled, your mind won\u2019t be settled at work either,\u201d Otunla noted.<\/p>\n
He shared a compelling example of integrity within the command: an officer who intercepted a Rolls-Royce vehicle on the Idiroko road and refused a bribe, choosing instead to bring the vehicle to the station. Otunla attributed this act of loyalty and sincerity to the officer\u2019s stable personal life.<\/p>\n
The Controller reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to prioritizing officers’ welfare under his command, emphasizing a strong open-door policy that encourages transparent communication across all ranks.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo matter your rank, my door is always open. Call me, talk to me\u2014I will listen. Let me know how I can support you, even in your personal matters,\u201d he assured.<\/p>\n
To foster unity and address concerns proactively, the Controller holds daily morning meetings with his management team. These sessions focus on operational matters and, importantly, the well-being of personnel.<\/p>\n
The meetings highlight issues including: Improved Barracks Accommodation with previously uninhabitable quarters, such as a top-floor unit with a damaged roof, have been fully renovated and are now occupied.
\nAccessible Healthcare: A fully equipped clinic is available for officers, stocked with essential medications. Medical personnel conduct regular health checks, including blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring.<\/p>\n
Despite challenges such as non-functional scanners, Otunla affirmed that the command remains efficient by conducting 100% manual inspections. \u201cWe rely on human labour for physical examinations, and it\u2019s working effectively,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The command also leverages intelligence gathering and collaboration with sister agencies to combat smuggling. \u201cWe receive timely information\u2014sometimes even phone calls\u2014about smugglers loading contraband. Once alerted, we act immediately,\u201d Otunla explained.<\/p>\n
