The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has firmly distanced itself and its members from the proposed shutdown of operations at Apapa Port, reportedly being organized by a coalition of customs licensed agents and freight forwarding associations.<\/p>\n
In a personally signed press release, Hon. Tochukwu Ezisi, National President of NAGAFF, clarified that the term \u201clicensed customs clearing agents\u201d has been replaced by \u201ccustoms representatives\u201d under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. He noted that some individuals involved in the planned shutdown may not be recognized under the current legal framework, including the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria Act of 2007.<\/p>\n
Ezisi emphasized that NAGAFF, as the umbrella body for freight forwarders nationwide, remains committed to constructive dialogue, lawful advocacy, and professional conduct in addressing industry challenges. He described the proposed shutdown as counterproductive and misaligned with the goals of port reform and innovation.<\/p>\n
\u201cDialogue, collaboration, and institutional engagement with relevant authorities are the most effective tools for resolving grievances and driving progress,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
NAGAFF urged all stakeholders to avoid actions that could disrupt port operations, harm Nigeria\u2019s economic interests, or undermine the credibility of the freight forwarding profession. The association reaffirmed its commitment to peace, professionalism, and progress in the maritime sector.<\/p>\n
The Apapa chapter of NAGAFF was specifically advised to continue business as usual, with the assurance that the association\u2019s leadership is in active communication with the Comptroller General of Customs\u2014who also chairs the World Customs Organisation (WCO)\u2014regarding the concerns raised.<\/p>\n
NAGAFF expressed confidence that the AIG Maritime and the Commissioner of Police Ports will maintain peace and order at Apapa Port, ensuring a safe environment for legitimate business activities.<\/p>\n
