The plans for King Charles III\u2019s funeral are currently underway as \u201cdeath is a possibility\u201d for the ailing royal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe business of planning his funeral has already begun,\u201d an insider exclusively tells In Touch of the current monarch. \u201cUnpleasant as it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n
In recent months, King Charles\u2019 health has been deteriorating. Buckingham Palace announced in February that he had been diagnosed with cancer just one week after his hospitalization for prostate surgery earlier that month.<\/p>\n
Although the father of two, 75, has returned to royal duties, the insider says the going has been rough. \u201cHe\u2019s making public appearances, but they\u2019re for shorter periods of time,\u201d notes the source.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s often whisked in by helicopter and then whisked out. After an engagement, he needs a good rest.\u201d As In Touch has previously reported, he was given just two years to live after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n
“The palace is giving the impression that Charles is on the mend, but he\u2019s still very sick,\u201d the insider explains. \u201cStill, he\u2019s the king and palace officials are practical enough to know death is a possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
The king\u2019s funeral plans code name is \u201cOperation Menai Bridge,\u201d named after a suspension bridge in Wales, a nod to King Charles III\u2019s longtime role as the Prince of Wales.<\/p>\n
The minute-by-minute plan will begin to unfurl the moment of the 75-year-old\u2019s death. First, the prime minister of the United Kingdom will be informed, followed by key personnel, setting the plan into motion.<\/p>\n
What will follow is the official announcement of his demise, the period of official mourning and the details of his state funeral.<\/p>\n
As viewers of The Crown have seen, the monarch\u2019s funeral prep begins almost as soon as he ascends the throne. But with Charles battling cancer, insiders tell In Touch the monumental task \u2014 Charles\u2019 mother Oueen Elizabeth II\u2019s 2022 death involved 10 days of events and 100 heads of state and thousands of military personnel \u2014 has become more urgent.<\/p>\n
Buckingham Palace confirms Charles\u2019 funeral plans are updated on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n
When the time comes, the royals will be ready for a ceremony worthy of a King. Charles\u2019 distinct tastes will no doubt be reflected in his funeral. The music lover commissioned new orchestral music for his May 2023 coronation, for example.<\/p>\n
An avid gardener and conservationist, he also used British wildflowers.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficials will make sure a funeral for the king meets his wishes and expectations while following proper protocol,\u201d the insider continues. \u201cCharles at least can find some peace in that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Charles has been the reigning monarch since ascending the throne in May 2023 following the death of his mother in September 2022.<\/p>\n
Heir apparent since 1952, Charles waited more than 70 years to wear the crown. At 73, he was the oldest person in British history to accede to the throne.<\/p>\n
A state funeral isn\u2019t the only thing on Charles\u2019 mind. A proponent of modernizing \u2014 and slimming down \u2014 the monarchy, he is eyeing a future where fewer and fewer royals are granted access to the balcony at Buckingham Palace during events like Trooper the Colour.<\/p>\n
More important, he\u2019s eager to see minor royals cut from the palace payroll.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith Prince Andrew\u2019s sex scandal and Harry and Meghan\u2019s exit, there are fewer working royals and no plans to replace them,\u201d says the insider of Charles\u2019 brother and estranged son and daughter-in-law.<\/p>\n
