President-elect Bola Tinubu has promised to use democracy to bring about widespread prosperity, job opportunities and realisation of Nigeria\u2019s latent potential.<\/p>\n
Tinubu made the promise while speaking on the importance of democracy in driving Nigeria\u2019s sustained development during the Inauguration Lecture presented by Kenya\u2019s former President, Uhuru Kenyatta, at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He promised to use democratic institutions to advance substantial economic changes that would lead to widespread prosperity, new job opportunities, and the realisation of the country\u2019s latent potential.<\/p>\n
He described democracy as the cornerstone for the national progress and prosperity, stressing that democracy is vital in advancing the nation\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n
The President-elect\u2019s address was delivered by the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima.<\/p>\n
Tinubu reiterated his commitment to the ideals of democracy as the best form of government.<\/p>\n
The incoming president while embracing his African identity, reaffirmed his love for the continent.<\/p>\n
He commended the collective efforts of Nigerians and Africans in shaping their democratic political cultures and institutions tailored to the unique conditions and challenges faced by their societies.<\/p>\n
The president-elect articulated the essence of democracy, saying it transcended beyond being a mere form of government.<\/p>\n
Tinubu said that while democracy guaranteed freedom, its survival hinged on responsible and measured use of its freedom, adding that democracy, as an ever-evolving concept, empowered the majority to express their will, while safeguarding the fundamental interests of the minority.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur democracy is not an abstract ideal; it is a practical vessel that will propel our nation to new heights in every facet of our collective existence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Tinubu said he acknowledged the merits of democracy, even in its imperfect manifestations, stressing that it surpassed the most perfect dictatorship in terms of justice, humanity, and productivity.<\/p>\n
He said the importance of fostering open forums for discussion and debate, where the best ideas and policies can enter the national discourse and capture the imagination of the people.<\/p>\n
He conveyed his sincere appreciation to former President Kenyatta for his outstanding speech, which further strengthened his belief in the transformational force of democracy.<\/p>\n
In his inauguration lecture, the former President Kenyatta, advised Tinubu to unite the country, irrespective of ethnic, political and religious cleavages that might exist.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe contest is now over and the hard work of building a prosperous and unified Nigeria now begins.<\/p>\n
\u201cUpon assuming the office of President, you would be wise to transcend from the tactical politics of an election and assume your role as Nigeria\u2019s vision bearer\u201d.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, President Muhammadu Buhari said the inaugural lecture took participants on a journey of introspection on the imperatives of democratic governance and nation-building and that the various challenges confronting the socio-political fabrics of Nigeria were highlighted.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have learnt that democracy is not just a system of governance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a way of life. True democracy is when the voice of the people is heard. Our nation\u2019s progress rests on inclusivity, unity and not leaving any citizen behind and by ensuring every citizen enjoy the dividends of good governance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must heed the lessons of this lecture and translate them into action. We must fight against corruption in all its form. We must remain united. Our diversity is our strength.<\/p>\n
