The new Customs Act will enhance efficiency and effectiveness of administration of the Nigeria Customs service.<\/p>\n
President Muhammadu Buhari said this on Tuesday while inaugurating the Customs\u2019 new headquarters building named CUSTOMS HOUSE in Maitama Abuja.<\/p>\n
He described the building as a testament to his administration\u2019s commitment to fostering a business\u2013friendly environment, attracting investments and driving economic growth.<\/p>\n
President Buhari said he had always recognised the critical role of Customs as an instrument of economic prosperity and overall development of the nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are all aware of the challenges faced by our Customs Service, particularly the issue of fragile borders that provide opportunities for illicit activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe recent increase in transnational crimes, smuggling, and security threats necessitates the need for a robust and agile customs administration.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am fully cognizant of these challenges and the urgent need to address them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am pleased to highlight that in line with our commitment to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our customs administration, I recently signed the Customs Bill into law.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new Act, which is a product of extensive consultations and deliberations, represents a significant step towards modernizing our customs operations, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and promoting trade facilitation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a testament to our commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, attracting investments, and driving economic growth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, who is also the Chairman of the Board of the Customs, said the edifice symbolised unwavering commitment to the operations of the Service and its readiness to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.<\/p>\n
She said that the board had ensured that the welfare of the service would be taken seriously.<\/p>\n
Retired Major-General Alli, the Comptroller General of the Customs Service, said about N19.6 billion was spent on the building.<\/p>\n
