The President-General of the Maritime Workers\u2019 Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, and the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, have commended Nigerian workers for their resilience and courage during the Workers\u2019 Day celebration in Abuja. <\/p>\n
Both labour leaders praised workers\u2019 steadfastness, tolerance, and perseverance in upholding the dignity of labour despite the nation\u2019s economic challenges. <\/p>\n
Comrade Bunu lauded workers across all sectors for their invaluable contributions to Nigeria\u2019s economy, assuring them that their sacrifices will not be in vain. He emphasized that Labour Day is not merely symbolic but a global platform for workers to engage governments and employers on welfare and grievances. He urged the Federal Government to review workers\u2019 remuneration and welfare packages, stressing that \u201ca happy worker is the pride of every employer.\u201d <\/p>\n
Bunu expressed optimism that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu\u2019s administration is addressing pressing national issues, but urged intensified efforts to tackle insecurity, warning that insecurity undermines labour growth and economic development. He also appreciated employers nationwide, particularly maritime stakeholders, for their commitment to sustaining the sector. <\/p>\n
Comrade Adeyanju, who also serves as President of the International Transport Workers\u2019 Federation (ITF), extended gratitude to maritime industry leaders including the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), and the leadership of STOAN for their immense contributions. <\/p>\n
He called on the Federal Government to reinstate Onboard Gangway Men at seaports to strengthen accountability and curb pilferage, noting that their presence would ensure proper records of discharged goods and boost government revenue. <\/p>\n
Adeyanju criticized poor wages, describing current salaries as \u201cmonkey take-home,\u201d and urged urgent review of workers\u2019 pay. He also appealed for the settlement of pensions owed to retirees of the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL), lamenting that many elderly retirees have been left unpaid for years. <\/p>\n
