The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi and his executives, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Comrade (Chief) Alfred Etete, a retired Vice President-General of the Union’s Seamen, NIWA & Water Transport Branch.
Chief Etete, a respected community leader in Agwut-Obolo, Rivers State, was reportedly shot dead in his residence by gunmen. His death has been described by the Union as a shocking and painful loss.
Comrade Etete served MWUN with distinction, earning admiration for his integrity, diligence, and unwavering commitment to duty until his retirement. He later dedicated his vast experience to the service of his community, where he continued to be a role model and mentor until his life was tragically cut short.
Speaking on behalf of the Union, Comrade Bunu described the late Etete as “a fine gentleman, a Comrade par excellence, and a versatile labour activist whose strong penchant for relating with colleagues was unmatched.” He added that Etete was “a jolly good Comrade who came, saw, and conquered.”
MWUN has called on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to urgently investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. “Nobody has the monopoly of life. No one has the right to take another’s life in cold blood for any reason whatsoever,” Comrade Bunu stressed.
The Union extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Chief Etete, praying for divine comfort and strength. “We believe Almighty God will not forsake the family he left behind,” Comrade Bunu said.
MWUN reaffirmed its commitment to justice, urging authorities to ensure that the killers are fished out for the sake of posterity and peace.
