The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has unveiled new strategies to enhance its operational efficiency and deepen collaboration with key stakeholders, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability.
At a press conference held at NIWA Headquarters in Lokoja, Acting Managing Director Umar Yusuf Girei highlighted recent initiatives, including a two-day Executive and Anti-Corruption training program themed “Strengthening Integrity and Revenue System in Inland Waterways Management.” The training brought together Board Members, Management, and Area Managers, alongside preparations for the 2026 NIWA Management Retreat in Abuja.
Girei emphasized that these reforms align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, supported by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola. He noted that NIWA is focused on aligning institutional goals to deliver improved services to Nigerians.
As part of its anti-corruption drive, NIWA has engaged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to explore measures for strengthening transparency across its operations.
The Acting MD assured staff that ongoing reforms will translate into better service delivery and improved working conditions.
“NIWA remains committed to continuous improvement and stakeholder engagement. These reforms are expected to enhance both internal performance and public confidence,” Girei stated.
