As part of the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) Corporate Social Responsibility mandate, the Controller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has commissioned a state-of-the-art educational facility at the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre to enhance learning and capacity building for inmates.
The project, executed by the KLT Customs Command under its Customs Care Unit, includes four fully furnished, air-conditioned classrooms, a standard library, an ICT-equipped centre, and a borehole to support sustainable rehabilitation.
Speaking at the commissioning, CGC Adeniyi emphasized that the initiative reflects a new approach to security and corrections.
“This project represents more than infrastructure. It represents belief — belief in rehabilitation, belief in the power of education to transform lives. True security goes beyond enforcement; it requires investment in people. It demands that we strengthen institutions that reform, rebuild, and reintegrate individuals into society,” he stated.
He further noted that education remains one of the most effective instruments of correction, stressing that inmates equipped with knowledge and skills are less likely to return to crime and more likely to become productive citizens upon release.
Controller of Correctional Service, Lagos State Command, Daramola George, described the intervention as historic and transformative, underscoring that structured education within custodial centres is central to successful reintegration.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Joy Edeldouk, whose tenure as Area Controller of KLT Command initiated the project.
