Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly championing a strategic alliance between Mr. Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. According to credible sources, both men have formed a joint committee to coordinate their efforts under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Peter Obi, who placed third in the 2023 presidential election as the Labour Party (LP) candidate, officially joined the ADC in December 2025. Kwankwaso, who came fourth under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has expressed openness to joining another party—provided he secures either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
The proposed Obi–Kwankwaso ticket is said to be in an advanced stage, with Obasanjo playing a pivotal role. An ADC official confirmed that Obasanjo not only endorsed Obi’s defection but also encouraged collaboration with Kwankwaso. The alliance is seen as a strategic move to weaken former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s influence within the ADC.
Although Kwankwaso has not formally joined the ADC, discussions are ongoing. Obasanjo is reportedly facilitating high-level connections between Obi and northern political stakeholders to solidify the alliance.
In January, Kwankwaso reiterated his willingness to accept a vice-presidential role, emphasizing that any political move must align with the interests of his long-established Kwankwasiyya Movement. He stressed that his supporters would only back a platform that guarantees him a top-tier position and reflects the movement’s core values—youth empowerment, education, economic development, healthcare, and agriculture.
