The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi and his executive team, paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, CP Agbaminoja Iyabode Oluwatoyin (Mrs), at the Western Port Police Command earlier this week.
Comrade Bunu emphasized that it is customary for MWUN to welcome newly posted Commissioners of Police to the Command. He noted that this visit was not only to extend a warm welcome to CP Iyabode but also to introduce the newly elected Union executives and reinforce the longstanding collaboration between MWUN and the Command.
He described MWUN as the largest and most strategic trade union in Nigeria, deeply integrated into the operations of the Western Port Command, which serves as a vital gateway to the nation’s economy.
Comrade Bunu pledged the Union’s continued support for the Command, stressing the importance of a unified approach to port security. He introduced key branch leaders—Comrade Agboola Bolaji (Dockworkers Branch) and Comrade Olufemi Oluyinka Abass (Shipping Branch)—as direct contacts for the Command in cases requiring immediate Union input.
He also outlined the Union’s structure, comprising four branches: Dockworkers, Seafarers & NIWA, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), and Shipping. Given his national responsibilities, he assured the CP that his team is always available to assist in his absence.
Commissioner Iyabode expressed appreciation for the visit, describing the MWUN delegation as resourceful and the engagement as timely. She affirmed that securing the port is a shared responsibility and welcomed MWUN’s active involvement.
She emphasized the importance of mutual respect and regular communication between the Police and the Union, noting that MWUN is a key stakeholder in the port’s daily operations. CP Iyabode pledged to maintain a civil and collaborative environment, ensuring that legitimate businesses within the port are protected.
Both parties agreed to maintain open channels for operational discussions and information sharing. The visit reaffirmed MWUN’s commitment to supporting the Command’s security efforts and CP Iyabode’s dedication to fostering a safe and thriving port environment.
