MWUN Disowns October 1st Planned Protest

Maritime Workers Union Nigeria (MWUN) has stated unequivocally that it has nothing to do with the October 1 planned protest.
The union registered its concern and apprehension
regarding the impending nationwide protest slated for tomorrow.
In a press statement credited the union’s President General, Comrade Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, MWUN specifically warned its members not to be part of it.
“We, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria wishes hereby, notifies its membership,
executive and the general public that the union is not associated with the individuals
planning the aforementioned protest. “As a union comprising essential service
providers and critical economic actors, our members, are committed to delivering
uninterrupted service, as demonstrated during the covid 19 lockdown when they worked tirelessly despite restrictive measures,” the union stated.

According to the statement, the union does not begrudge any Nigerian citizen his or right to peaceful assembly and expression of themselves, it however asserted emphatically that the union
and all its members do not take industrial action directive that do not emanate from
the Unions’ recognized organs such as the Central Working Committee (CWC).

It noted that this planned October 1st 2024 Protest is not called by its CWC and its members are therefore not obliged to participate.
Consequently, it seriously advised members not to embark on any mass
action in the ports, terminals, jetties and oil and gas platforms in all our nation’s ports.

Emphasizing its non-involvement in the protest, it called on all its members to maintain industrial peace and harmony and be on the alert to prevent would be miscreants
from penetrating and invading the ports, jetties, terminals and Oil and Gas Platforms
during the impending October 1 2024 protest.

Members were enjoined to ignore any
invitation to foment trouble under the guise of protesting and avoid participating in
or staging any mass action at their work station and premises as well as immediate environment.
