Some Governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senators-elect for the 10th Assembly are mobilising against the plans by the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to make the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate president and Senator Jibrin Barau from Kano State as the Deputy.
While the President-elect is craving for a Christian from the South to be the Senate President, some northern governors believe that the North should produce the next Senate president based on the region’s contributions to Asiwaju’s victory.
Tinubu had earlier met with all APC governors and informed them of the need to have a Southern Christian as Senate president.
However, when the President-elect met with the party’s governors from the North West, where Barau comes from the story changed as the governors insisted that the Senate President should come from the north.
Already there are indications that lawmakers-elect, especially those who are returning to the Red Chamber, are against the nomination of Akpabio as Senate president.
This is despite the ongoing consultation by Tinubu with critical stakeholders of the party.
Some senators believe that Akpabio would not be able to pilot the affairs of the parliament.
Tinubu might have been advised to allow the senators sort themselves out about their leadership as some governors and senators are supporting former governor of Abia State and current Chief Whip of the Senator Uzor Oji Kalu.
Some Northern senators are said to be supporting Senator Sani Musa from Niger State.
