The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is urging citizens traveling to the United States to strictly adhere to the purpose and guidelines of their visa classification. This advisory follows growing concerns raised by the U.S. Government over misuse of U.S. entry visas by Nigerian nationals.
According to NCS, travellers are to note the followings:
– Adhere to Visa Guidelines: Activities that violate the stated purpose of the visa—such as unauthorized work or using a tourist visa for medical tourism—can result in visa revocation.
– Continuous Monitoring: U.S. authorities conduct ongoing assessments of visa holders, even after arrival. Violations of immigration rules, customs regulations, or federal laws may lead to legal consequences.
– Cash Declaration Rules: Travellers must declare any amount above $10,000 (or its equivalent) when entering or exiting the U.S.
– Legal Compliance Matters: Fraud or misconduct committed in the U.S. or Nigeria can be prosecuted under the respective legal systems.
– Preserving National Integrity: The NCS is actively partnering with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to prevent Nigeria’s inclusion on any extended visa restriction lists, ensuring continued access for legitimate travellers.
