In a decisive stride towards sustainable water transport, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) hosted a strategic engagement session on Wednesday at its headquarters in Ikoyi. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), RIL Hydro Kraft Limited—advocates for marine CNG—and prominent boat operators across Lagos.
LASWA’s General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, emphasized the critical role of CNG-powered boats and electric ferries in lowering carbon emissions, enhancing safety, and reducing operational costs. He reaffirmed LASWA’s commitment to aligning waterway mobility with sustainable energy transition goals.
Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, PD/CEO of Pi-CNG, outlined the Federal Government’s roadmap for CNG deployment across transport sectors, sharing national success stories and pledging robust support for maritime integration.
Mr. Layi Solesi, CEO of RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, delivered an insightful technical overview of CNG infrastructure—detailing conversion processes, safety standards, fueling logistics, and long-term economic gains. He presented proven case studies from international coastal cities and expressed readiness to launch pilot schemes with local operators.
Operators raised critical questions about cost, engine compatibility, infrastructure, and maintenance needs. LASWA and Pi-CNG responded with assurances of inclusive implementation, continuous stakeholder engagement, and capacity-building initiatives.
