The Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ) has applauded Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi’s historic election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO), calling it a monumental achievement for Nigeria and global customs leadership.
In a joint statement signed by NNMJ Chairman Dele Aderibigbe and Secretary Moses Ebosele, the group described Adeniyi’s June 28 appointment in Brussels as a defining milestone. He is the first Nigerian to hold this esteemed role since the WCO’s establishment 73 years ago.
The NNMJ lauded Adeniyi’s visionary leadership, quoting former U.S. President John Quincy Adams:
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
Under Adeniyi’s guidance, the NCS has evolved into one of Nigeria’s top-performing revenue-generating agencies, second only to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). The NNMJ commended his forward-thinking reforms and dedication to transparency and modernization.
“On behalf of all maritime journalists in Nigeria, the NNMJ congratulates CGC Adeniyi for bringing pride and honour to our nation,” the statement read.
As he steps into this global role, the journalists’ network urged Adeniyi to continue championing innovation and uphold the WCO’s legacy of excellence in customs administration.
