The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has emphasized the significance of seafarers’ roles in powering the blue economy and connecting nations across oceans.
The NIMASA boss lauded the seafarers as Nigeria joined the global community to celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, recognizing the invaluable contributions of seafarers to international trade, economic growth, and the global supply chain with the Theme: “My Harassment-Free Ship”.
This year’s theme highlighted the need for a safe, respectful, and professional work environment onboard ships. Dr. Mobereola stressed that seafarers’ welfare is paramount, and ships should reflect the highest standards of dignity and professionalism, fostering zero tolerance for harassment.
During the celebration, Seven amendments to the MLC 2006 code were approved, addressing issues affecting seafarers, including recognition as key workers, protection against shipboard violence and harassment, and enhanced access to shore leave and repatriation.
NIMASA promise to establish clear policies and procedures for preventing and addressing harassment on Nigerian-flagged vessels, ensuring confidential reporting channels and thorough investigations.
Shipowners, operators, and crewing agencies were urged to review their operational manuals to align with the new amendments ahead of their entry into force in December 2027.
The celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of seafarers’ safety, well-being, and dignity.
Dr. Mobereola expressed appreciation to stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, and the Merchant Navy/Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria. He also saluted the courage of seafarers and reaffirmed NIMASA’s commitment to supporting them .
The event emphasizes the need for a culture of zero tolerance for harassment, ensuring seafarers can report grievances without fear of retaliation. By working together, the maritime industry can create a safer, more respectful, and more productive work environment for all seafarers .
