The mass protests called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the removal of petrol subsidy by the Federal Government have commenced nationwide.
In Abuja, members of the NLC and other affiliate unions, had as early as 8am converged on the Unity Fountain in Maitama Abuja, to commence the nationwide mass protest at the federal capital territory.
The situation is also the same in Lagos State, as the protesting workers, armed by banners and placards bearing different inscriptions, converged on the Ikeja under-bridge to kick start the protest.
Similarly, in Ogun State capital, members of the NLC who had hitherto gathered at the state Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Leme, Abeokuta, have moved to major roads in the metropolis, embarking on the peaceful protest.
Also, reports from Ibadan, Oyo State, Osogbo, the Osun State capital and Kano, indicate that the mass protests have commenced in earnest.
The organised labour in Bayelsa State has also commenced the protest against fuel subsidy removal.
Information has it that the workers are at the time of this report, marching along the Mbiama-Yenagoa Road to the Government House in the state capital, Yenagoa.
Several policemen and other security operatives are monitoring the protest.
Recall that last Wednesday, the NLC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the federal government to reverse what it described as all “anti-poor” and “insensitive” policies.
Talks between the leadership of the labour unions and the Federal Government representatives on short-term palliatives ended in a deadlock on Tuesday.
