President Muhammad Buhari has conferred the country’s highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), on President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

The president also gave the second highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima.

This took place on Thursday in Abuja four days to the formal handover of the mantle of power by Buhari to Tinubu as Nigeria’s new President.

This is part of the ongoing investiture ceremony for the President-Elect and his Vice, Kashim Shettima.

It was also part of the lineup of activities scheduled to hold in a space of eight days for the inauguration of the new government as released by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Presidential Transition Council Chairman, Boss Mustapha.

The Grand Commander of the Federal Republic is a title exclusive to presidents.

Tinubu said he understood the full import of the investiture and declared “I shall not disappoint you.”

He also commended President Buhari for doing his best for the nation, stressing that the country would not forget him.

The transition programme, tagged “NIGERIA: Better Together”, will feature 13 events throughout the eight days.

The SGF said, “I am delighted to inform you that May 29, 2023, will mark the 7th consecutive democratic transition of power in Nigeria and on that day, we shall all be ushering in the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
